Because its a car and people can buy whatever they want for whatever reason. It's like people buying a truck and never hauling anything or using the bed. Cars have purposes set by people in society buy you don't have to strictly use a vehicle in that manner.

Weather for one.
Winters in Midwest can be brutal.
But. my Jeep Cherokee always gets through no matter how deep the snow.
They are also great for towing, camping trailers and boats.
My wife likes the commanding virew of the road from behind the wheel of her GMC Envoy XL.
She feels safer than if she were in a normal sedan. She is only 5'-1".
Last but not least, not all of our roads are paved. Some do not even have gravel.
